Author Interview & Giveaway: D. F. Lamont

Aside from writing, I run my own ad agency - Jetpack Media - in Winnipeg, Canada where I live  with my wife and children.
I’m also a musician and, according to author and Daily Show correspondent John Hodgman, an expert in “Many Worlds Theory.”

Inspirations for the book?
I actually wrote the book to procrastinate from another book I was trying to write, and that I couldn't make work!
I had a couple of inspirations: one was a dream I had form childhood - a dream within a dream. Another was my kids’ imaginary friends. I thought that imaginary friends were more common with only children, but my kids had not just one, but a network of them.
I also knew that imaginary friends disappeared. So I had this idea of combining the two, of having imaginary friends who disappear into a dream world at a certain point in kids’ lives, and that those friends are actually real.
So I sat down and on two pages of a notebook I wrote down some of my recurring dreams, and some of the
Did you know you wanted to be an author when you were little?
Yes. I actually got a little toy printing press - a little cheap one - and put out a couple of little pamphlets.
I’ve been working at writing for a long time. I started a student newspaper at college that was kind of like The Onion - funny articles, satirical reviews, and people really liked it.
That’s very different than story-telling, but I gradually built up some skills.
More recently, when I was writing press releases and ad copy, and my writing would be better than the end product, which is not what you want. And I thought “if my writing can be the end product, maybe I can sell that.”
You can have all these ideas, the hard part is unfolding them into a complete story.
With my first book, the Jinx, what I really wanted to do was finish something. With this one, I wanted to make a story that was a little more emotional.

Peanut Butter or Chocolate?
Both! Separately, or together.

Is there a soundtrack to the book/Favorite music?
I do like writing to music, especially instrumentals. I bought a bunch of old 50s instrumentals - Sleepwalk by Santo and Johnny, which is one of my favourite songs of all time, and some other instrumental singles. Some classical - I bought Bolero by Ravel, and it came on an album with more Ravel that I had never heard before - Daphnis and Chloe. So I listened to a lot of that.

How long do you write on any average day?
When I am writing on a project, I try to write at least 1,000 words a day. That’s about four pages, so however long that takes. If the ideas are flowing, I may write more.
Give us the number one reason to read Three Dreams Deep.
It’s a fun read that’s suspenseful, mysterious, and different from a lot of the other books that are out there. And it’s really good!

Three Dreams Deep   Who’s Dreaming Who?
In the middle of a dream, 13-year-old Willis Newman runs into Sala – a girl his age who says they used to be best friends. She needs his help to find her brother Miles, who has been lost for years on another level of reality – three dreams deep – and bring him back to the land of the living.
Can Sala be trusted? Can Miles be saved?
Or are they all just a figment of Willis’ imagination?

Book Review: Become by Ali Cross

Become is the debut book of author Ali Cross, and the first in a promising new series.
Cover Blurb
Sixteen-year old Desolation Black wants nothing more than to stay in Hell where it’s cold and lonely and totally predictable. Instead, she’s sent back to Earth where she must face the evil she despises and the good she always feared.
When Desi is forced to embrace her inner demon, she assumes her choice has been made—that she has no hope of being anything other than what her father, Lucifer, has created her to be. What she doesn’t count on, is finding a reason to change—something she’s never had before—a friend.

Before I start this review, I feel inclined to say that, due to some issue I had with the content*, I actually didn't finish this book. But I believe I read enough of it for the review to be somewhat useful.
I loved the fact that, though Desi (Main Character) was born into such an awful family circumstance (Lucifer as a dad is pretty hard to beat!) she showed that there is always a choice to be made. At a few points in the story she turned into an indecisive, unsure person, but quickly recovered and was able to lead the plot forward steadfastly. The chemistry between Desi and Michael (Love Interest) was very smooth. Michael was every girl's dream. Sometimes he seemed almost too good to be true, but he never turned into a bore. And I found myself rooting for Miri (Desi's Friend) the whole time.
Characters: 4 Stars
I could not put the book down! It was a beautiful concoction of action and reflection, jumping from development to development. The later half of what I read was starting to slow, and a few elements were confusing. But the overall view made sense.
Plot: 4 Stars
In many young adult books there aren't really any consequences for the characters' actions. But in Become, ever action had a reaction. And the idea that, though we can't choose our circumstances, we can choose our actions, became a very strong theme. I loved how Ali Cross used these ideas to build a strong steady core for her book. Her writing was clear and engaging.

*As a fight between angels and devils, with the Viking gods making up the world creators, I found this particular world against my religious views (I realize it was for fictitious purposes, and very likely doesn't represent what the author believes :). It wasn't offensive, but for personal reasons I decided not to finish the book.

Author Interview & Free Book: Jacqueline Gardner

Jacqueline Gardner works as a Story Editor for the production company, Labragirl Pictures.  Her love of storytelling began at an early age when she would make up stories with her grandmother before bedtime.  In early 2010, she completed her first novel and has been stuck on writing ever since.  She resides in Colorado and loves hiking, writing, fantasy fiction, and all things cupcake.

Favorite reads?
I love everything YA, but I also have a soft spot for food & travel memoirs.

Inspirations for the book?
A random thought. What if I could've heard people's thoughts in high school?

Did you know you wanted to be an author when you were little?
No. I was a crazy storyteller when I was little but I wanted to be a doctor, an astronaut, or an astronaut doctor.

Pet Peeves?
Okay this is a weird one. I hate it when you pay for something with cash and the cashier hands you your change on top of your bills. I always drop my change!

Chocolate or Peanut Butter?
Both of them together.

What's the weirdest thing you've ever done?
That probably depends on who you ask! But something weird about me is I sleep better on a floor than I do in a bed.

Is there a soundtrack to the book/Favorite music?
There isn't though I've thought about putting one together. When I wrote THOUGHTLESS, I listened to a lot of music by The Sounds.

Do you need anything to write?
Noise! I can't write in absolute silence.

How long do you write on any average day?
When I'm writing a first draft I write as much as I can until it's finished. When I edit, usually 2-4 hours a day.

Give us the number one reason to read your book.
You'll be up all night! Okay, maybe not all of you. But you'll definitely be entertained.

Interview & Giveaway: Ryan Collins

Writer.jpg   Ryan Collins was born in Texas in 1985. While attending Texas State University he earned
his bachelor’s degree in exercise science with a minor in writing, and moved toward a post-
graduate degree in computer information systems. In the company of a few unpublished short stories, Narrative Loserdom represents his first self-published novel. Ryan works for a local communications company in Austin, Texas, where he resides with his girlfriend and pugs.

Favorite reads?
The Great Gatsby, John Updike’s Rabbit Tetralogy

Inspirations for the book?
Adolescence in general, and the question of what it might look like from the vantage of a teenage
boy’s journal. I suppose there’s also that whole autobiographical thing…

Did you know you wanted to be an author when you were little?
Nah, the prospects of mountain climbing and stunt doubling jaded me.

Pet Peeves
Little sleep and gradually cooled showers come to mind.

Chocolate or Peanut Butter?
Definitely chocolate, though Reese’s Cups make a convincing argument.

Is there a soundtrack to the book/Favorite music?
Only in my head, but if ever given the opportunity to make one of those purely instrumental
movie trailers, “Caribou” by The Pixies would be the song.

Do you need anything to write?
A lot of time (failing complete isolation!).

How long do you write on any average day?
Maybe an hour’s worth of e-mails for work (IT). When attempting a project, ideally an hour.

Give us the number one reason to read your book.
You might enjoy it!

Narrative Loserdom: From Journal One  Justin Taggart doesn’t know anything (about being a loser). He likes girls and plays sports and has some friends. Unfortunately his fear of rejection outweighs his ability to deal with these well. Mostly there’s Sterling, the girl of his dreams who knows how to stop his heart by not knowing he likes her. Another thing is trying to get money with Adam, who’s rich anyway so it’s more about hanging out. As for Justin, he makes ends meet by mowing people’s yards with Adam, and sometimes by breaking into vending machines and selling late-night cable programming to peers (also with Adam). But it’s not like he doesn’t feel bad about it, since Jesus died for his sins. School is pretty terrible with all the work and practice, but there are a few people there worth mentioning. Anyone who picks up his journal will be in for something, if they feel like getting through a lot of grammar and spelling problems. They’ll probably end up seeing that they shouldn’t have looked at it anyway, because this is someone’s private anthem of girls, grass, and loserdom.

Book Review: Three Dreams Deep by D. F. Lamont

   Three Dreams Deep

Three Dreams Deep was a shorter book than I've read for a while, but it still managed to leave me with the satisfaction of a well-crafted read.
Willis (main character) embodied the innocence of youth while still carrying the responsibility of the dangerous circumstances squarely on his shoulders. He leaned on Sala to show him the ropes of her world, and I liked that in the end she was able to lean on him. And I loved how he didn't even consider forsaking his friends when the odds were stacked against him and he could easily have walked away. I did feel that Maya (antagonist) seemed to come out of nowhere, with no clear motives or emotions. But she served her purpose, and I definitely didn't want her to win.
Characters: 4.3 Stars
Twining in and out of realities, or dreams, this plot was one of the more unusual ones I've seen. I couldn't put it down! Instead of simply dying, or the entire world being destroyed, the cost of failing in this world was to lose all individuality. To join a singular mass with no identity. A fate far worse than death. The important questions were answered, but, like all good books, the ending left my mind buzzing with even more.
Plot: 4.6
  D. F. Lamont paints a landscape so vivid and strange that the dreamlike atmosphere is easily recognizable. With no familiar points to draw on, the geography that bled into the plot was clear, and flowed effortlessly.

Saturday Snatch: Drink, Slay, Love by Sarah Beth Durst

Drink, Slay, Love is the newest book from award-winning author Sarah Beth Durst and not your average vampire book.
"Having her way with the conventions of the genre, Durst crafts a fresh, modern, and humorous twist on the vampire novel. Lively characters and a sweet romance are icing on the cake." --Publishers Weekly
I've thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of Sarah Beth Durst's books, and I can't wait to read this one! Unfortunately, I'm still twelfth in line at the library...

Cover Blurb:
Pearl is a sixteen-year-old vampire, fond of blood, allergic to sunlight, and mostly evil... until the night a sparkly unicorn stabs her through the heart with his horn. Oops.
Her family thinks she was attacked by a vampire hunter (because, obviously, unicorns don't exist). They're shocked she survived. They're even more shocked when Pearl discovers she can now withstand the sun. But they quickly find a way to make use of her new talent. The Vampire King of New England has chosen Pearl's family to host his feast. If Pearl enrolls in high school, she can make lots of human friends and lure them to the king's feast -- as the entrees.
The only problem? Pearl's starting to feel the twinges of a conscience. How can she serve up her new friends -- especially the cute guy who makes her fangs ache -- to be slaughtered? Then again, she's definitely dead if she lets down her family. What's a sunlight-loving vamp to do?

Tell me what you think :)

Interview & Giveaway: T.L. Clarke

TLClarke - author.jpg   T.L. Clarke (TLC) is the author of Blood Oath, the second book in the Gabby Girls Adventure novels. A lifelong reader, TLC has always had a particular fascination with mysteries, adventure and mythology. When she is not writing, she can be found watching bad movies, listening to music, and traveling. Originally from New York, TLC now lives in the WashingtonDC area, where she is hard at work on the next installment of The Gabby Girls Adventure novels.

Favorite reads?
My favorite reads are:

  • The Hunger Games Trilogy
  • The Vampire Academy series
  • The Mortal Instruments series

Inspirations for the book?
I love to read. Variety is very important to me but I wasn’t finding a lot of YA Paranormal books with diverse characters. Hence my inspiration, writing a YA Paranormal series with diverse young women who are empowered, intelligent and could care less about what society says they should be, think or act.

Did you know you wanted to be an author when you were little?
Absolutely, I knew that I wanted to be an author from the first short story I wrote in junior high. I turned a ‘what I did over the summer’ assignment into an over the top drama filled story.  Yes, I was a drama queen even back then ;-)

Pet Peeves
People who talk during Movies and drivers who don't indicate properly.

Chocolate or Peanut Butter?
Definitely both. Reese's butter cups anyone?

Is there a soundtrack to the book/Favorite music?
Music is a big inspiration for me. Here’s a list of songs that kept me rocking throughout the writing and editing process for “Blood Oath”
Hard”
Rihanna
Empire State of Mind” (feat. Alicia Keys)
Jay-Z
“Pretty Girl Rock”
Keri Hilson
“Smile”
Avril Lavigne
“Disturbia”
Rihanna
“Power”
Kanye West
“What the Hell”
Avril Lavigne
“Moment 4 Life”
Nicki Minaj
“Till the World Ends”
Britney Spears
“Crazy in Love”
Beyoncé
“Calling All the Monsters”
China Anne McClain
“If I Have My Way”
Chrisette Michele
“I’m With You”
Avril Lavigne
“Give Me Everything”
Pitbull
“Price Tag”
Jessie J
“All of the Lights”
Kanye West
“Rolling in the Deep”
Adele

Do you need anything to write? (ex. chocolate, music, slippers) :)
I’m a New York girl; I need the chaos of background noise to function ;-). When writing my definite must haves are the following: the television on low, music on blast and bottles of ice-cold sparkling water at the ready.

How long do you write on any average day?
On average four hours if I have an idea or concept buzzing around in my head.

Give us the number one reason to read your book.
It’s a clean YA paranormal read with diverse characters.  Blood Oath (A Gabby Girls Adventure Novel, Book #2) – The battle against pure evil begins. Friendships are betrayed. Rivals bond…and powers collide.

Author Info: T. L. Clarke

TL Clarke - BloodOath.JPGWelcome to the dark and powerful world of the Eternals.
Gabrielle Martin discovers that she was born into a secret society called the Eternals—Warriors sworn through blood to annihilate dark and evil creatures that walk the shadows of the earth. Everything she has known to be true is a lie…just smoke and mirrors to disguise a deadly world filled with half-human, half-vampire Underworld Warriors with one goal—to kill all Eternal Warriors.
